Three Stars of the Week: Jan. 7-13, 2013

1st Star: LW Brandon Saad, Rockford (AHL)
The Line: 3GP, 2G, 4A, +2 plus/minus

The IceHogs won two of three last week, and Saad played a big part in both victories, netting a single-game high of four points (1G, 3A) against Grand Rapids, a total that ties the franchise rookie single-game record set by Jack Skille in the 2007-08 season. The next night, in Milwaukee, Saad tallied a goal and an assist, scoring the overtime game-winner, and his hot streak earned him CCM/AHL Player of the Week honors.

2nd Star: C Vincent Hinostroza, Waterloo (USHL)
The Line: 3GP, 3G, 5A, +4 plus/minus

Though the Black Hawks opened the week with a 8-3 loss at Sioux Falls on Jan. 9, the team bounced back by scoring 12 goals in their next two games, and Hinostroza played a central part in the action. He recorded a goal and two assists in a 6-2 victory over Team USA on Jan. 11, then exploded for four points (2G, 2A) the next night against Muskegon.  Hinostroza is tied for third on the team in scoring this season with 43 points (19G, 24A).

3rd Star: LW Garret Ross, Saginaw (OHL)
The Line: 3GP, 3G, 4A, +2 plus/minus

Ross' seven-point effort last week led the Spirit to three consecutive home victories, including one against the first-place London Knights, a fitting anointment for Saginaw's newest captain. He tallied one assist on Jan. 9 vs. Plymouth , then logged three-point games against Erie on Jan. 11 (1G, 2A) and London on Jan. 12 (2G, 1A). Ross was named OHL Player of the Week for his contributions; he has 49 points (24G, 25A) in 38 appearances for Saginaw this season, good for second on the team and tied for 15th in the Ontario Hockey League.

Honorable Mentions: C Alex Broadhurst, London (OHL); D Nick Mattson, North Dakota (WCHA)

Broadhurst continues to be an impact player for the OHL's top club, registering four points (2G, 2A) and a +5 plus/minus rating in three games for the London Knights. Overall, his +23 rating on the season ranks second on the team.

UND spiit their weekend series against Colorado College, but Mattson contributed offensively in both outings, scoring his second goal of the season in a 4-3 loss on Jan. 11 and collecting an assist the following night in a 5-3 victory. He finished the weekend with a +4 rating.

Around the system:

  • Rockford right wing Jeremy Morin has registered a goal in each of his last three games, his longest scoring streak of the season.

  • Brandon Whitney recorded two wins over the weekend for the QMJHL's Victoriaville Tigres, including a 38-for-39 performance against Val d'Or, and finished his week with a 2-1 record.

  • Victoriaville traded Phillip Danault, their captain, to the Moncton Wildcats in exchange for Gabriel Gagne, two first-round picks in 2014, a first-round pick in 2015 and a second-round pick in 2015. Danault registered one assist in his first appearance for Moncton over the weekend.
