3 Stars of the Week: Jan. 21-27, 2013

1st Star: C Phillip Danault, Moncton (QMJHL)
The Line: 4GP, 7A, +6

Four games in five days? No sweat for the Wildcats, as they blazed through their tough schedule to extend their win streak to eight games and counting. Danault continued on his recent tear, racking up seven helpers in those four games, three of them coming on Jan. 25 at Acadie-Bathurst. The 2011 draft pick has now amassed 15 points in his first eight games with Moncton, which now ranks second in the Maritime Division and fifth overall in the QMJHL.

2nd Star: RW Jimmy Hayes, Rockford (AHL)
The Line: 3GP, 3G

Though the IceHogs lost all three games of their homestand last week, Hayes picked up his game offensively, tallying a pair of goals on Jan. 21 against Texas and matching a season high with five shots on goal. Five nights later, Hayes dented the net once more against Oklahoma City, bring his season count to 12 goals, fifth among Rockford skaters.

3rd Star: G Mac Carruth, Portland (WHL)
The Line: 3GP, 1 shutout, setting another Winterhawks franchise record

It's a sign of how strong Carruth's season has been that his 1-1-0-1 line from last week seems ordinary, but the 20-year-old's one win was an important one: On the road against Spokane, Carruth saved all 36 shots he saw for his franchise-record ninth career shutout, the second Winterhawks goaltending mark he's toppled in the last 15 days.

Honorable Mentions: G Matt Tomkins, Sherwood Park (AJHL); LW Garret Ross, Saginaw (OHL)

Tomkins is quietly putting together a strong campaign in the AJHL, winning both of his starts last week and currently ranking third in the league with 17 wins. The 2012 draft pick made 98 saves on 101 shots over three appearances, including a 54-save effort against the Spruce Grove Saints.

Saginaw captain Garret Ross contributed offensively to the Spirit's three wins last week, scoring a game-tying goal in the third period on Jan. 23 at Erie, a game Saginaw won in the shootout, and then logging a two-point game (1G, 1A) in a 5-4 victory over Niagara on Jan. 26.

Around the system:

  • Notre Dame snapped a five-game losing streak with a 5-2 victory over Bowling Green on Jan. 26, with defenseman prospect Stephen Johns logging a pair of assists and a +2 plus/minus rating in that contest.
  • Vincent Hinostroza had his goal streak snapped, but still registered three assists in two games, including a pair of helpers in a 8-1 victory at Omaha on Jan. 26.
  • The Rockford IceHogs sent two players to the AHL All-Star Game: captain and offensive leader Martin St. Pierre and rookie defenseman Adam Clendening. The pair helped the Western Conference prevail in the Skills Competition, and the game will be played on Jan. 28.
