Mackenzie McCluer / Chicago Blackhawks

Throughout the week, 2013 draft pick John Hayden will be blogging for chicagoblackhawks.com about his experiences during his first Blackhawks Prospect Camp.

I think this final game was the most competitive of all three scrimmages, especially since we were competing for that big trophy. It’s unfortunate that we got the loss, but I think our team worked hard all three days. We were joking that we got the two wins before this one, so I think we’re still ahead.

Overall, I think I had a really good game again today [Ed. note: Hayden scored a goal and fought defenseman Sam Jardine in the third scrimmage.] It all goes by pretty fast, but I play a physical game. I was driving to the net there and he dropped them and I was willing to go. That’s part of my game.

Now that the final horn has sounded, we’re all heading home. But this week has given me, and everyone else, a taste of the next level. It’s a really competitive sport and you realize how hard it is to make it to the top. It’s going to take a lot of work in the offseason and during the season to make it to the NHL, so you have to be willing to sacrifice.

The coaches gave us some DVDs of our games and we had some meetings where they talked about things that we need to work on. Everything I did here—everything that went well—I want to keep going next season. The things I need to improve on, I’ll keep working on, so by the time next year’s Prospect Camp comes I’ll be a little better at everything.

The three scrimmages are some of the best memories I have of this week. All three of the games were fun and it’s good to be here with competitive, spirited guys.

Besides that, the off-ice stuff we did was really fun. Our trip to Wrigley was great, since it’s got a really nice old-school feel and I really like that. If I’m lucky enough, I’ll get to play in this city some day. It’s an unbelievable place with a lot going on, and it was a great experience over the last five days. I’m really happy to be a part of the organization and to have even the chance to play in such a great city like Chicago.

Thanks for reading this week—it's been really fun, and a great chance to share what camp is like!
