3 Stars of the Week: Dec. 30, 2013-Jan. 5, 2014
(Todd Reicher/Rockford IceHogs)

1st Star: C Joakim Nordstrom, Rockford (AHL)
The Line: 4GP, 3G, 4A, +3 plus/minus rating

Nordstrom erupted for seven points last week, contributing in three of Rockford's four contests as the IceHogs snapped a seven-game losing streak. The 2010 third-round pick scored his ninth goal of the season in a 3-2 shootout loss to the Iowa Wild on Friday, contributed two goals and an assist the next night in a 4-2 win over Grand Rapids. On Sunday, in a 4-3 shootout loss at Chicago, Nordstrom added two helpers, including one on the game-tying goal late in regulation. He is currently tied for the team lead with 11 goals and shares second with 20 points, despite playing just 27 games this season.

(Jon Quackenbos/Boston College)

2nd Star: C/RW Kevin Hayes, Boston College (H-EAST)
The Line: 1GP, 2A, +2

The lone event on Boston College's calendar this week was a big one: an outdoor showdown at Fenway Park against new Hockey East rival Notre Dame. The game was a frigid, choppy affair, as both teams struggled to find their rhythm in harsh elements, but Hayes and the Eagles' top line found just enough offense in the third period to emerge with a 4-3 win. Chicago's 2010 first-round pick assisted on a shorthanded goal before adding a second helper on the game-winner.

(Greg Hamil/Rockford IceHogs)

3rd Star: LW Garret Ross, Rockford (AHL)
The Line: 4GP, 1G, 1A, +4

Ross recorded an assist on the game-winning goal on Jan. 4 against Grand Rapids, then added an empty-net tally, his ninth of the season. Overall, Ross was +4 in four games last week. He ranks eighth on Rockford with 17 points (9G, 8A) in 35 games, and his +4 rating is third-highest among team forwards.

Honorable mentions: RW Jeremy Morin, Rockford (AHL); C John Hayden, Yale (ECAC)

Morin notched helpers in two straight games last week before netting the game-winning goal in Rockford's 4-2 win over Grand Rapids on Saturday, his first since Nov. 16. His 89 shots on goal this season (in 21 games) pace team forwards and rank third overall.

John Hayden, Chicago's 2013 third-round selection, opened his collegiate goalscoring account with his first career tally in a 3-3 tie at Vermont on Saturday. Hayden now has four points in 14 games with defending NCAA champion Yale as a freshman.

Minnesota blueliner Justin Holl tallied his sixth assist and point of the season in the Gophers' opening goal in a 6-2 win over Rensselaer on Saturday.

  • Adam Clendening, Rockford's leading scorer, snapped a five-game streak without a point in the new year, collecting two helpers on Jan. 3 against Iowa and another pair of assists on Sunday at Chicago...
