Brandon Saad named OHL First Team All-Star


Rewarded for his best amateur season to date, Blackhawks prospect and Saginaw Spirit left wing Brandon Saad was named an Ontario Hockey League First-Team All-Star on Wednesday, the league announced.

The year-end recognition, determined by a vote of OHL general managers, is the first for Saad, who joins the ranks of top-end NHL prospects including Dougie Hamilton and Tyler Toffoli on the first team. Nail Yakupov, a potential candidate to be first-overall selection in the 2012 NHL Entry Draft, made the OHL's third team at right wing.

In Saginaw, Saad was a dominating force for much of the 2011-12 campaign. In 44 games, Saad recorded 76 points (34G, 42A), tied for second-best on the Spirit and among the top-20 in the league. His 1.73 points-per-game average was the highest in the league. In the OHL Playoffs, he led Saginaw with 17 points (8G, 9A) in 12 games, the third-highest point total at the time the Spirit were eliminated.

A Blackhawks second-round draft pick in 2011 (43rd overall), Saad spent a short amount of time in Chicago this year, going scoreless in two regular-season games to start the year, and then registered an assist in two playoff games.
