Throughout the week, 2014 draft pick Beau Starrett will be blogging for chicagoblackhawks.com about his experiences during his first Blackhawks Prospect Camp.

Three days into camp and we finally got in our first scrimmage! I was looking forward to this, especially getting the opportunity to play with some guys who I previously hadn’t.

Right off the bat, all of the boys were skating really well and the intensity was there. The speed was good and the energy level was high. Even though this was the first scrimmage, I kept in mind not to do too much or try to impress people. It was important to stick to the system, do the simple plays, find the open man and just throw the puck on net. That’s when good things happen.

I think that philosophy is what really came in handy for me today. In the second half of the scrimmage, I deflected the puck for the goal, which was of course a great feeling. This scrimmage was also useful because it let the coaches see more out of us than what they have been getting. In the practices, they get to see if we’re coachable and how well we can take direction, but they didn’t know what we’d be like in a game situation. With these scrimmages, they are able to find that out.

I’m sure my family will be happy to hear about my performance at camp today. Even though none of them were able to make the trip out here, they’ve been keeping up via online updates and talking to me. Being able to attend my first camp with the Blackhawks is something that’s very special to both my family and myself. I’m the first of my three brothers—Pete (Harvard), Troy (Babson), and Shane (Boston University)—to be picked to attend an NHL camp so everyone was happy for me.

With so much going on at camp, a few of the other prospects and I thought it would be nice to get out and see what Chicago had to offer. Last night, Luc Snuggerud, Jack Ramsey, my roommate Dylan Sikura and I went out and grabbed some dinner at a steakhouse on Rush St.

Tomorrow we’ll hit the ice again and have another scrimmage. I’m also looking forward to the off-ice training and practice with my group. It should be another eventful day at camp.
