Two Blackhawks' Olympic journeys ended in Sochi on Tuesday, as Slovakia's comeback bid fell short against the Czech Republic, 5-3. Slovakia cut the lead to 4-3 late in the third period, before a power-play goal sealed the Czech's win. Former Calgary Flames center Roman Cervenka scored twice for the victorious Czechs, while Blackhawks winger Marian Hossa scored two of his own as the Slovakian squad was eliminated from the tournament.
Michal Handzus (SVK): The veteran center was a key part of the Slovakians' comeback, assisting on both of teammate Hossa's goals to cut the deficit from 4-0 to 4-2. Handzus won 57 percent of his faceoffs (16 of 28) in what may be the last Olympic game of his career, skating 21:19 while racking up a plus-two rating. Handzus ended the tournament with two assists, a plus-one rating and an average of 20:00 skated per game, tops among Slovakian forwards.
Marian Hossa (SVK): The Blackhawks' star winger had arguably his best game of the tournament, scoring Slovakia's first two tallies in the failed comeback. Hossa's five shots on net led his team, as did his plus-two rating. He finished the tournament with a team-high three points (2G, 1A) in four games, also leading his team with 14 shots on goal.
Michal Rozsival: The defenseman skated for 13:23 in the victory, registering a minus-one rating and one shot on net. Rozsival was on the ice for Hossa's first goal, skating with Tampa Bay Lightning defenseman Radko Gudas.
Other day 6 notes: Slovenia's first-ever Olympic tournament run will continue, after they defeated Austria, 4-0. Former Nashville Predator Alex Radulov scored twice for Russia as the host country shut out Norway, 4-0. In the day's lone upset, Latvian netminder Edgars Masalskis stopped 32 of 33 shots to defeat Switzerland, 3-1.
