This Week In Hawks History: May 25-31

Some memorable dates this week in Blackhawks history:

  • Dirk Graham
On May 25, 1990, the Hawks’ Indianapolis farm team captured the IHL Turner Cup Championship. Darryl Sutter won the league's Coach of the Year honors that season as the Ice’s bench boss, two years before becoming the 29th head coach in Blackhawks history.

  • On the same date in 1995, Hawks captain Chris Chelios scored the game-winning goal 6:22 into overtime in Game 3 of the Western Conference Semifinals to beat Vancouver 3-2. Chelios repeated the feat two nights later to give the Hawks a four-game sweep of the Canucks, sending them to the conference finals against Detroit.

  • On May 26, 1992 in Game 1 of the Stanley Cup Finals at Pittsburgh, Mario Lemieux capped a four-goal rally by scoring in the final minute of regulation to give the Penguins a 5-4 decision over the Hawks.

  • At the Chicago Stadium on May 30, 1992, a crucial face off win late in the first period resulted in the only goal of Game 3 of the Stanley Cup Finals - a tally by Kevin Stevens - as Pittsburgh prevailed 1-0 to take a commanding 3-0 edge in the best-of-seven series.
