Blackhawks Sign Defenseman Adrian Aucoin

Chicago Blackhawks General Manager Dale Tallon announced today that the Blackhawks have signed free agent defenseman Adrian Aucoin to a four-year $16 million deal.

"Adrian Aucoin was one of the top players we had targeted," said Blackhawks General Manager Dale Tallon. "He's a smart hockey player, logs lots of ice time, and is a solid two-way player who has an excellent shot from the point. He possesses excellent leadership skills and is a character player. He is also a classy individual who fits in perfectly with our organization."

Aucoin, 32, 6'2" and 215 pound defenseman was selected by Vancouver in the 5th round, 117th overall in the 1992 NHL Entry Draft. He has appeared in 602 career regular season NHL games recording 83 goals and 162 assists for 245 points, 456 penalty minutes and a plus/minus rating of plus-50 while skating the Vancouver Canucks, Tampa Bay Lightning and the New York Islanders. Aucoin has also appeared in 27 career playoff games recording four goals and seven assists for 11 points and 16 penalty minutes while averaging nearly 31 minutes of ice-time per game (30:58).

Aucoin played in 81 games for the Islanders during the 2003-04 season, averaging nearly 27 minutes of ice-time per game while being named to his first NHL All-Star Game. That season saw him register 13 goals, 31 assists for 44 points, 54 penalty minutes and a plus/minus rating of plus-29. Aucoin's 44 points led all Islanders defensemen in scoring while ranking 5th on the team overall and tied him for 11th overall in the NHL for scoring by a defensemen. He also led all Islanders with a plus/minus rating of plus-29 which ranked 7th in the NHL.

Aucoin skated overseas last season (2004-05) appearing in 14 regular season games for MODO Hockey Ornskoldsvik of the Swedish Elite League recording two goals and four assists for six points and 32 penalty minutes. He also played in six playoff games for MODO recording one goal and 16 penalty minutes.
