Red Beats White 5-4
Prospect Igor Makarov continued to impress at Prospects Camp as the Red Team skated away with a victory for the second straight scrimmage, beating the White Team 5-4 in a shortened game Wednesday at the Edge.

Makarov scored a goal in the contest, while handling the puck and skating well, and has looked impressive through the first two scrimmages of prospects camp.

“He’s somebody we’re definitely going to talk about,” said Rockford IceHogs Head Coach Mike Haviland. “Makarov is a guy I think can play and has a bright future, and I think everyone else agrees with me.”

The game was cut short because of an injury to defenseman Simon Danis-Pepin, who early in the 3rd period went down with a neck injury after colliding with a teammate. He was taken to the hospital on a stretcher as a precaution, but team doctors say he never lost consciousness and had full feeling in his extremities.

“The last ten minutes or twelve minutes [of the game] didn’t really mean much after that,” said Haviland.

Forward Ben Smith, who had two goals yesterday, added another goal in Red’s victory. Free agent invitee Mike Radja, who tallied two assists the previous day, added his own goal and assist as well in the win. Adam Berti, who spent most of yesterday’s scrimmage playing hard-nosed defense, also made an impact on offense with a goal in the 2nd period.

Akim Aliu and Evan Brophey added goals for White in the 1st period, and 2008 first-round pick Kyle Beach registered an assist in the 2nd.

“I wouldn’t count out Kyle Beach or Akim Aliu [to make the NHL roster this year],” said Haviland. “I think they bring a different something that we may need up here: an edge.”
