|NORFOLK (1) at WILKES-BARRE/SCRANTON PENGUINS (2) OT |
WILKES-BARRE, PA - Despite 48 saves by Corey Crawford, the Norfolk Admirals (45-18-6-1) fell 2-1 to the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins (44-18-2-4) after Tyler Spurgeon's goal with just 21 seconds remaining in overtime on Friday night at the Wachovia Arena at Casey Plaza.
Despite being outshot 18-8, the Admirals took the lead in a fast-paced first period. While on the power play, Pierre Parenteau skated around a defender down the right wing and sent a pass across the crease to Martin St. Pierre at the opposite side of the goalmouth. St. Pierre one-timed the pass behind Wilkes-Barre goaltender Nolan Schaefer at 14:39.
Corey Crawford stonewalled the Penguins with 43 saves through the first 58 minutes of the game. However, the Penguins were able to get one past him with just 1:44 remaining in regulation after they pulled Schaefer in favor of an extra attacker. Micki DuPont took a shot from the point that was blocked in the slot. The puck caromed back to DuPont at the right point, and his second effort found its way through traffic and past Crawford at 18:16 to knot the score at 1-1.
Wilkes-Barre won the game with just 21 seconds remaining in overtime. Tyler Spurgeon benefited from an Admirals' turnover at the Norfolk blueline and broke in on Crawford two-on-one. He deked from the left circle across the crease and stuffed a backhander into the cage at 4:39 of overtime.
Crawford (50 shots, 48 saves) was saddled with the loss in his franchise record 53rd appearance of the season. Schaefer (20 shots, 19 saves) got the win.
Norfolk was 1-3 on the power play. Wilkes-Barre/Scranton was 0-5.
The Admirals now have a three-point cushion over the Penguins in the East Division. With the point for the overtime loss, Norfolk goes one point ahead of the idle Hershey Bears for the East Division lead.
The Admirals face Binghamton tomorrow (Saturday) night at 7:05 p.m.
