This Week In Hawks History: May 18-24

Some memorable dates this week in Blackhawks history:

  • Bobby Hull and Stan Mikita
The Hawks - led by all-time greats Bobby Hull, Stan Mikita and Tony Esposito - suffered a heart-breaking loss on May 18, 1971, a 3-2 decision to Montreal in the seventh and deciding game of the Stanley Cup Finals. The Canadiens rallied with a third-period goal by Henri Richard to seal the win on that hot, humid May night.

  • On May 18, 1992, Hawks defenseman and Chicago native Chris Chelios tied a team playoff record with three assists in a period during a 4-2 win over Edmonton.

  • Jeremy Roenick scored 2:45 into overtime in Edmonton for a 4-3 decision over the Oilers on May 20, 1992. Two nights later, also on the road, the Hawks whipped Edmonton 5-1 to complete a four-game sweep and move into the Stanley Cup Finals against Pittsburgh. The win marked the Hawks’ 11th-straight playoff victory, setting an NHL record.

  • On May 23, 1995, goalie Ed Belfour registered his second career Blackhawks playoff shutout during a 2-0 decision over the Vancouver Canucks in Game 2 of the conference semifinals.
