Pirates Steal One From Admirals
Despite scoring three power play goals and leading for most of the game, the Admirals fell 5-3 on Saturday night after four unanswered goals by Portland.
Portland controlled the first period territorially. However, it was Norfolk who struck first with a bang-bang play on a man-advantage. Shawn Thornton sent the puck from the point to Michael Blunden to the right of Portland goalie Nathan Marsters. Blunden sent a one-touch pass to Matt Keith in the slot, and Keith finished the play by one-timing it past Marsters at 14:35. Zenon Konopka tied the game with another power play one-timer at 19:18. The teams skated to the locker rooms deadlocked at one goal apiece after the opening frame.
Two power play markers early in the second stanza gave the Admirals a two-goal lead. Quintin Laing sent a wrist shot from the bottom of the right circle just inside the near-side post at 1:21. Just under four minutes later, Carl Corazzini blasted a Pavel Vorobiev pass past Marsters at 5:20. However, with seven seconds left in the period, Ryan Shannon beat Corey Crawford with a short side shot to pull Portland to within a goal with a period left to play.
Portland took over the game in the final frame. A turnover in the Admirals' end led to a breakaway for Shannon, and the center scored his second goal of the night to tie the game at 3:42. Simon Ferguson gave the visitors their first lead of the night at 6:24. Geoff Peters rounded out scoring with an unassisted goal at 11:27, as Portland won 5-3.
Corey Crawford was saddled with the loss and stopped 39 of 44 shots. Nathan Marsters made 20 saves on 23 shots and got the win.
The Admirals were 3-9 on the power play. Portland was 1-6.
