Nathan Barrett scored two goals, and Mike Brown had a goal and two assists, as the Admirals won their third straight game 3-2 over the Wolf Pack on Sunday afternoon in Hartford. Box Score>>
Norfolk took the first lead of the game for their third consecutive contest. Mike Brown stole the puck behind the Hartford goal and centered it to Colin Fraser in the slot. Fraser's shot was stopped by goaltender Al Montoya, but Nathan Barrett scooped up the rebound and sent a backhander into the net at 3:26. Admirals' netminder Corey Crawford stopped ten shots in the period to preserve a 1-0 Norfolk lead after the first.
The lead doubled 6:54 into the second period. Martin St. Pierre sent a pass from just over the Admirals' blue line to Brown at the opposite blue line. Brown broke in alone on Montoya and sent a wrist shot over the goaltender's right shoulder for his second goal of the season.
Hartford closed to within a goal of Norfolk with 2:29 left in the period. Defenseman Marvin Degon sent a shot from the right-side half-wall past a screened Crawford just beneath the crossbar. The Admirals took a 2-1 lead into the third period.
The Wolf Pack tied the game with a power play marker just 1:47 into the third period. Alexandre Giroux deposited a wraparound into the back of the net on the glove side of Crawford to knot the score at two goals apiece. The score would not remain tied for long, as Barrett's second goal of the night just 3:18 later gave the lead back to Norfolk.
Barrett sent a shot from slot that went wide of net. However, the rebound caromed off the end boards and back to Barrett at the left-side circle. The Admirals' second-leading goal scorer put the puck over the pads of a sprawling Montoya for his 28th goal of the season.
The Norfolk defense, led by Crawford in net, made several big plays to maintain their one-goal lead in the last half of the final frame. Crawford stopped a Colby Genoway tipped-shot with under a minute to go to seal the victory for the Admirals.
Crawford stopped 32 of 34 shots in the game and picked up the victory. Al Montoya got the loss and made 25 saves on 28 shots.
Norfolk was 0-2 on the power play. Hartford was 1-2.
