White Beats Red 4-2 In First Scrimmage
Check back Friday for an Eye on the Hawks video report on winger Jack Skille.
Finnish winger Marko Anttila scored the game-winning goal as White beat Red 4-2 Thursday in the first scrimmage of the 2006 Prospects Camp.
White jumped out to a 1-0 lead when North Dakota left wing Chris Porter beat Red goalie Corey Crawford with a blast from the left circle after a faceoff win by Tony Lagerstrom.
Troy Brouwer, the leading scorer in the WHL last season, evened the game up for Red when he narrowly beat goalie Mike Brodeur on a penalty shot. Video: Watch Brouwer's goal
A short time later, 2006 1st round pick Jonathan Toews regained the lead for White when he picked up a rebound close-in and roofed a backhand past Crawford. Toews centered a line with fellow World Junior teammates Dan Bertram on left wing and Mike Blunden on right wing.
"I thought the tempo was great for the first day out there," said Norfolk Admirals head coach Mike Haviland. "We did two 25-minute halves and the tempo for both halves was great. We've got a lot of talented kids. I'm excited and I know a lot of people in the organization are too."
Following Antilla's tally to make it 3-1, 2006 6th round pick Chris Auger cut the Red deficit to one when he beat tryout goalie Cedric Desjardins.
With 30 seconds to play, Haviland called a Red timeout and pulled University of Vermont goalie Joe Fallon to setup a play for extra attacker Jack Skille. The play worked as the 2005 1st rounder fired off a clear shot, but Desjardins made the save to preserve the Red victory.
Colorado College winger Scott McCulloch sealed the game for White with an empty-netter.
"I had a ton of fun out there today," said Skille. "To skate against those guys and with guys like [Dave] Bolland and [Bryan] Bickell, it was a lot of fun."
The scrimmage ended with a shootout, which White also won by a score of 6-2. 2004 2nd round pick Jakub Sindel was among the scorers for White.
The two teams will scrimmage again Friday morning at the Edge in Bensenville.
Wisconsin winger Matt Ford did not scrimmage for Red due to a recent appendectomy. C Jan-Mikael Juutilainen and goalie Joe Palmer, both 2006 draft picks, did not play for White as they are both arriving to camp late.
