NORFOLK, VA - Jonas Nordqvist and Troy Brouwer had the Norfolk Admirals (15-5-3-1) ahead of the Hershey Bears (15-3-3-3) by one goal late in the third period, but goals by Tomas Fleischmann and Jonas Johansson gave the Bears a 3-2 overtime victory over the Admirals at Scope on Wednesday night.
Nordqvist opened scoring late in the opening period. Matt Keith took a shot from the top of the right circle that Bears backstop Frederic Cassivi kicked out. The rebound went right to Nordqvist at the top of the left circle, who fired it into a yawning cage at 18:04 of the first period.
Hershey knotted the score at 1-1 midway through the second period on a five-on-three power play. Alexandre Giroux roofed a Fleischmann offering top shelf at 12:55 of the second stanza.
The Admirals re-took the lead midway through the third period. Brouwer converted a cross-crease pass on the power play at 9:10 to give Norfolk a 2-1 lead.
However, Fleischmann evened the score at two goals apiece with just 2:45 remaining in regulation to eventually send the game into overtime.
Johansson broke in on goal alone and fired a shot past Norfolk netminder Corey Crawford 2:43 into the extra session to give Hershey the victory.
Crawford (36 shots, 33 saves) was saddled with the loss. Cassivi (23 shots, 21 saves) picked up his 200th career AHL win.
