Blackhawks Notebook: Hawks' Scoring Touch Returns

The Blackhawks regained their scoring touch Monday night, netting their largest offensive output in nearly a month and riding two power play goals to a 4-1 victory over Los Angeles. Chicago’s biggest offensive outburst came in the third period, with three tallies on 10 shots.

“We finally got a few cracks on the power play and that’s all it took,” said Jonathan Toews. “We’re supporting each other. We had some good break outs and got some pucks in the corners. When you do that, you’re going to get some shots from the point, and I think that’s what happened for us in the third.“

Coming in to Monday’s contest, the Blackhawks had converted just three of their last 27 power play chances. But they were effective with the man advantage against the Kings, scoring on two of their three opportunities, including Troy Brouwer’s game-deciding goal early in the third period.

“Our objective has just been getting a lot of pucks to the net and bodies around [the goalie],” Brouwer said. “Coming home we really wanted to get our power play going and start with a good effort. We haven’t played a full sixty minutes and we’ve had a few mental lapses in our last few games. It seemed to work for us tonight.”

“We have stretches where we aren’t as effective as we’d like [on the power play] and sometimes you’re doing some things where it looks like it could be coming on,” said head coach Joel Quenneville. “Last game we scored, and I like how we stuck with it. Hopefully we can get some production out of it consistently because it really helps our offense. That’s the best way to get your offense going.”

One key to the rejuvenation on special teams might have been the return of Toews, who had been sidelined since October 21. The Hawks' captain was on the ice for both of their power play goals Monday and scored the latter one.

“Johnny had the puck a lot and played some quality minutes,” Quenneville said. “I thought his line was sharp and effective, and he got the power play going as well. He provided a lot of energy.”

With just one win in their last four games coming into the contest, the Blackhawks will ook to use the remaining three games of the homestand to gain some confidence and add to their point total before the annual six-game “Circus Trip.”

“We’re playing with urgency,” said John Madden. “We started slipping and we can’t do that. We have to get back to the way we were playing at the start of the season. We’re on pucks and we made things happen tonight. I think we can clean up and little, but when we do that we will be a really tough team to play against.”
