Unsung Hawks: Steve Konroyd

Since the Blackhawks entered the National Hockey League in 1926, there have been hundreds of unsung players who wore the Indian head with pride and passion, playing key roles on a team without grabbing the headlines.

Steve Konroyd played for Chicago from 1988 and1992, appearing in 251 regular-season games and 42 playoff matches.

Konroyd's career spanned 15 NHL seasons with six different teams, as well as two appearances in the World Championships playing for Team Canada in 1985 and 1991.

After stints with the Calgary Flames and New York Islanders, Konroyd was traded to Chicago from New York in 1988 for Marc Bergevin. He joined the likes of Denis Savard, Steve Larmer, Doug Wilson, Dirk Graham and Jeremy Roenick as the Blackhawks took the Norris Division the next two seasons.

While he was never the biggest defenseman, Steve was known for his sharp passing and his heads-up defensive play. In his four seasons in Chicago, Steve was a mainstay on the blue line and part of the squad that went to the 1992 Stanley Cup Final.

Steve proved his value away from the ice as well; in an era of high-powered agents, Steve handled his own contract negotiations.

Following his retirement in 1995, Steve began a career in broadcasting. He’s now in his fourth season as pre- and post-game analyst for the Blackhawks' television broadcasts.

Get Steve's autograph at the United Center Tuesday, Dec. 1 when the Blackhawks host the Columbus Blue Jackets.
