The Rockford Rewind: Smith does damage in week 5
-Third period goals by Kyle Beach and Jeff Taffe forced overtime and eventually the shootout.
-Taffe tied the game with 1:09 left in regulation with the goalie pulled.
-The veteran center then won it in a shootout for Rockford when he scored in the fifth round.
Sat., Nov. 6: Manitoba Moose 3 vs. IceHogs 1:
-After a scoreless first 40 minutes, Ben Smith put Rockford out front with a goal early on in the third period.
-Rockford couldn’t hang on, however, as Manitoba struck for three goals in a 1:20 span late in the third period.
-The IceHogs dropped both home games on the 2010-11 slate against Manitoba.
Sun., Nov. 7: IceHogs 1 at Peoria Rivermen 5:
-Hugh Jessiman found the score sheet for the first time this season tallying in the first period.
-Peoria used two power-play goals to pull away from Rockford.
-The IceHogs are 0-2-0-0 at Peoria’s Carver Arena this season.
-Rockford has three wins this season when trailing entering the third period after accumulating just four all of last season.
-The IceHogs have tallied just six goals in regulation over their past four games.
-Through five weeks, Rockford ranks fourth in the AHL giving up just 26.58 shots per game.
-The team’s 3.50 goals against average ranks 28th in the AHL.
-Jeremy Morin made his NHL debut on Wednesday for Chicago, the fifth different IceHogs skater to make his NHL debut this season. Evan Brophey, Ben Smith, Brandon Pirri and Nick Leddy also played in their first NHL game in 2010-11.
-With their 3-1 loss against Manitoba on Saturday, Rockford has now lost four-straight home games against the Moose.
-Sunday’s loss at Peoria marked the first time this season in which the IceHogs didn’t follow a regulation loss with a win.
-Rockford is now 4-1-0-0 in games following a regulation loss heading into Week 6.
Forward Ben Smith
Rookie winger Ben Smith, fresh off of his first career NHL recall to the Chicago Blackhawks, tallied a pair of points during Week 5 of the AHL regular season. Smith set up Rockford’s first goal on Wednesday in Milwaukee during Rockford’s 3-2 come-from-behind shootout victory over the Admirals. The Avon, Conn. native then potted Rockford’s only goal on Saturday in a 3-1 loss against Manitoba.
