The Chicago Blackhawks have signed defenseman Dylan Olsen, the team’s first choice, 28th overall, in the 2009 National Hockey League Entry Draft, to a three-year contract

Olsen, 19, paced team defensemen with 12 assists and ranked second with 13 points in 17 games through December as a sophomore at the University of Minnesota-Duluth. Over parts of two campaigns with the Bulldogs (2009-2010), he registered 24 points (2G, 22A) and 71 penalty minutes in 53 tilts.

Though born in Salt Lake City, Utah, Olsen is currently representing Canada at the 2011 World Junior Championships in Buffalo, New York, tallying one assist and a +1 plus/minus rating in three games. He also collected four points (2G, 2A) and a +4 plus/minus rating in six games with Team Canada at the 2009 Under-18 IIHF World Championships.

Prior to attending the University of Minnesota-Duluth, Olsen racked up 168 penalty minutes and 53 points (18G, 35A) in 102 career games over two seasons with the Camrose Kodiaks of the Alberta Junior Hockey League. During his first campaign with the club, Olsen helped the Kodiaks capture the 2008 AJHL championship and the 2008 Doyle Cup, before losing in the final of the Canadian Junior ‘A’ championship to the Humboldt Broncos.
