Blackhawks sign defenseman Joe Lavin
5th round pick helped Notre Dame to Frozen Four
The Chicago Blackhawks have signed defenseman Joe Lavin to a two-year contract, which begins at the start of the 2011-12 season.
Lavin, 21, recorded collegiate career-highs in goals (6), assists (11) and points (17) in 44 contests this season during his senior year at the University of Notre Dame. Originally selected by the Blackhawks in the fifth round (126th overall) of the 2006 National Hockey League Entry Draft, the defenseman captained the Fighting Irish to the 2011 Frozen Four this season.
A native of Shrewsbury, Massachusetts, Lavin finished the 2010-11 season with the American Hockey League’s Rockford IceHogs, notching one assist, a +1 plus/minus rating and four penalty minutes in two AHL tilts in his professional debut. The blueliner registered 36 points (9G, 27A) over 110 contests during his NCAA career, and posted 40 points (12G, 28A) in 57 games over parts of two seasons with the Omaha Lancers of the United States Hockey League.
