Catching up with... Steve Montador

How have the Blackhawks been spending their offseason? chicagoblackhawks.com recently sat down with your favorite players to see how their summer has gone so far and discuss some of their aspirations for the 2011-12 NHL campaign. chicagoblackhawks.com caught up with defenseman Steve Montador, who signed a four-year deal with the Blackhawks on June 30. In 73 games with Buffalo last season, Montador tallied 26 points (7G, 21A) and racked up 83 penalty minutes.

What did you do this summer?
Shortly after the season ended, I traveled to Europe and the Middle East with a teammate and friend of mine. Along the way, at the Rome Masters Final, I watched [Maria] Sharapova beat [Samantha] Stosur, and sitting right beside me—randomly, in that 15,000-seat building—was Duncan Keith. Being able to do all that traveling, having a vacation like that and, certainly, ending up next to Duncan, was pretty unique, so the trip was a pretty good experience overall.

I also went to New York once, Boston once and Washington once, for a day or a couple of days, and spent time at the cottage or in Toronto.

Do you have a favorite hobby in the offseason?
Most of it is training—I consider it a job, but it’s also a hobby of mine that I really enjoy. Also a little bit of golfing and fishing.

Do you have a favorite spot to go golfing or fishing?
Yeah, fishing at the lake where we have our house, and golfing with my dad at his golf clubs.

Is there anything particular you work on when you’re training?
My trainer helps me get back into the shape I need to be in, it’s an overall kind of thing.

Aside from sitting next to Duncan Keith, did you keep in touch with any other teammates?
I’ve been on so many teams that I’ve gotten to know a lot of really great guys, and become friends with a whole lot of them. I got a really nice text message from Brett McLean the day I signed, and was happy to hear when he texted me back the next day that he’d signed here too. That was special because I enjoyed my time playing with him.

Do you have a personal goal for the season?
To contribute to winning the Stanley Cup.
