Montador on the road to recovery, says Bowman

With defenseman Johnny Oduya’s future locked in for the next three seasons, attention turned to a different Blackhawks blueliner whose status at the moment is slightly more fluid: Steve Montador.

The 32-year-old defenseman missed a total of 30 games this season and the entire playoffs with an upper-body injury, but Blackhawks VP/GM Stan Bowman says his status is improving.

“He’s in the same boat as [injured forward] Marian Hossa; they’re on the road to recovery,” Bowman said on Tuesday’s media call. “We’re certainly optimistic that come September they’ll be ready to play. But we’re sitting here in May, so it’s hard to predict that.”

Though his status is not 100 percent certain, Bowman says that Montador’s injury will not directly affect any further transactions the team makes during the summer.

“I don’t think you make any specific moves in anticipation of an injury or the status of a player. I think we’re looking at it more as whether we can improve our team, and if there are opportunities to do that, then we’re going to try to make that work.”
