Blackhawks launch ‘A Step aHead’ concussion awareness initiative for second year
The Chicago Blackhawks, in conjunction with the Amateur Hockey Association of Illinois (AHAI), Athletico Physical Therapy and NorthShore University HealthSystem, have launched the second year of the ‘A Step aHead’ concussion awareness initiative by offering complimentary baseline ImPACT testing to all AHAI members ages 13-18 today through Nov. 30, 2012.
The test is used to establish a baseline of normal cognitive function for each individual athlete, and the results are used as part of comprehensive clinical evaluation following any head trauma. Each complimentary test, which is valid for two years, takes about 30 minutes to complete and is offered at 24 Athletico clinics. If an athlete sustains a concussion, the baseline test results can be sent to a physician of their choice, free of charge. For more information about the ImPACT test, visit www.impacttest.com.
Together, the four groups have pledged to educate the Illinois youth hockey community on the importance of concussion management. For more information, visit www.chicagoblackhawks.com/youthhockey, and for resources and information on how AHAI members can register, visit www.athletico.com/impact.
