CHICAGO – Chicago Blackhawks captain Jonathan Toews did not take a shift in the third period and was forced to watch his team hang on for a 3-1 victory against the Boston Bruins in Game 5 of the 2013 Stanley Cup Final at United Center on Saturday night.

Toews cut to the middle of the ice with the puck and took a hard hit from Boston Bruins defenseman Johnny Boychuk during the second period and he was slow going to the bench, but he returned to the game.

He took four shifts after the hit, including one in the final minute of the second period. Toews assisted on each of Patrick Kane's goals to give Chicago a 2-0 lead.

Blackhawks coach Joel Quenneville said Toews has an upper-body injury. Game 6 will be played Monday at TD Garden in Boston (8 p.m. ET; NBC, CBC, RDS), where Chicago will have the opportunity to win its second Stanley Cup in four seasons. Quenneville said he's "hopeful" Toews will be able to play in Game 6.

"We had an idea after the second period, but to see him out there on the bench supporting the team and doing whatever he can -- even though he wasn't going to get a shift -- gave us a little boost," Blackhawks wing Patrick Sharp said of Toews. "We didn't have our best third period, but we have a deep team, we used everybody to protect that lead."

Toews has two goals and 12 points this postseason.
