When Ryan Hartman was drafted in the first round by the Blackhawks this past summer, he joined the organization as a two-time champion with Team USA, having won gold at the 2012 U18 World Championship and 2013 World Juniors. The West Dundee, Ill., native, could have the opportunity to add a third title to his resume, after being named to the preliminary roster for the 2014 World Junior squad on Dec. 4.
Joining Hartman on the 26-player squad is fellow 2013 draft pick Tyler Motte, who currently plays for the University of Michigan. Team USA will participate in a four-day training camp beginning Dec. 15 at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis, which includes a game against Minnesota State on Dec. 17. The team will then travel to Sweden to take on Finland and Sweden in exhibition matches before the final World Juniors roster is announced on Dec. 23.
Four other Illinois natives have also been named to the preliminary roster: forwards J.T. Compher (a 2013 pick by Buffalo), Tommy DiPauli (2013, Washington) and Stefan Matteau (2012, New Jersey); and defenseman Connor Carrick (2012, Washington).
“We are very excited about seeing five players from Illinois selected for this team,” said John Dunne, President of the Amateur Hockey Association of Illinois (AHAI). “It is a tribute to both the players’ exceptional work ethic and dedication to the game as well as the various youth programs these players have been developed at throughout the state of Illinois. All of us who are a part of Illinois hockey wish them well in the upcoming tournament.”
