The Chicago Blackhawks, in conjunction with the National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association (NSSA), announced today that radio play-by-play voice John Wiedeman has been selected as the NSSA’s Illinois Sportscaster of the Year. It is the first such award for Wiedeman.

Wiedeman is in his eighth season as the radio play-by-play voice of Blackhawks hockey on WGN Radio AM-720, calling two Stanley Cup championship wins during his tenure. Prior to his time in Chicago, Wiedeman served the same capacity for the New York Islanders from 2001-06 and spent four seasons as the radio play-by-play voice and Director of Media Relations for the Cincinnati Cyclones of the International Hockey League, while also serving as a substitute broadcaster for the Tampa Bay Lightning and Columbus Blue Jackets. In 1996-97, he served as the radio play-by-play broadcaster for the Philadelphia Flyers, a season in which the Flyers advanced to the Stanley Cup Final.

A graduate of the University of Kansas, Wiedeman was named Director of Broadcasting, Public and Media Relations for the Muskegon Fury of the Colonial Hockey League in 1992. In August 1994, he took over the same position with the Worcester IceCats of the American Hockey League.
