Blackhawks to face Capitals in 2015 NHL Bridgestone Winter Classic
The Chicago Blackhawks, in conjunction with the National Hockey League, announced today that the team has been selected to participate in the 2015 NHL Bridgestone Winter Classic. The game will take place on Jan. 1, 2015, at 12 p.m. CT in Washington, D.C., against the Washington Capitals.
“It’s an honor to be selected by the NHL to participate in the 2015 Winter Classic,” said Blackhawks President and CEO John McDonough. “This is another marquee event for the Blackhawks and we’re looking forward to spending New Year’s Day in our nation’s capital.”
This will mark the second Winter Classic appearance, and third outdoor game, for the Blackhawks organization. Chicago hosted the Detroit Red Wings in the event on Jan. 1, 2009, at historic Wrigley Field. The team also hosted the Pittsburgh Penguins in the NHL Stadium Series at Soldier Field on March 1, 2014.
The NHL Winter Classic debuted on Jan. 1, 2008, at Ralph Wilson Stadium in Orchard Park, N.Y., between the Buffalo Sabres and Pittsburgh Penguins. Over 4.4 million viewers in the United States tuned into the 2009 game at Wrigley Field, making it the most-watched NHL game in almost 34 years at the time.
The Blackhawks and Capitals will both be participating in their second Winter Classic, becoming the fourth and fifth teams in NHL history to make two appearances in the event.
More information on the 2015 NHL Bridgestone Winter Classic, including tickets, venue and television information will be announced at a later time.
