HARRIS BANK COACH OF THE MONTH – OCTOBER 2008

Mike Tompkins
Hometown: Chicago, IL
Current Team: Head Coach of Skokie Flyer Midget program

Coaching Background:
Mike "Coach T" Tompkins is the head coach of the Skokie Flyer Midget program. With over 20 years of coaching experience at the A, AA, AAA and high school levels, his travel teams have been Illinois State Champions, NIHL President Cup Champions, as well as Silver Stick Regional Champions. His Fremd High School team won three consecutive Varsity Red State Championships, with an astounding record of 95-1-1.

Coach T’s Playing Background:
Mike played Junior A for the Paddock Pools Saints National Championship team in Detroit. He advanced to the ACHL, playing for the Pinebridge Bucks and the Mohawk Valley Comets. After a career-ending injury, Mike returned to the Chicago area and immediately began coaching youth hockey.

More than Just Hockey with Coach T:

Playing for Coach T means more than just hockey for his players. Academics and community service are an important part of Mike’s philosophy. Last year Mike’s teams participated in:

• A Halloween food drive for the local food pantry
• Assisting at a soup kitchen
• Fundraising game vs. the AHAI sled hockey program
• Raising money for breast cancer research by wearing pink jerseys over Mother’s Day weekend

This season, the Skokie Flyer Midget teams have a goal to surpass last year’s achievements.

Coaching is not just a job to Mike, it’s his passion. He credits his parents, who were raised in Canada, for his enthusiasm, as they put him in his first pair of skates at age 3 and never turned back.

Mike thanks his family - wife Sue and daughters Makenzie and Victoria - for their support and understanding of his schedule. He can’t say enough about all the players who have played for him, especially his current teams. Through their commitment and appreciation of the game, they remind him every day of why hockey is the greatest sport of all.
