Coyotes-Blackhawks Preview

Ilya Bryzgalov isn't doing much to help his chances of staying the Phoenix Coyotes' No. 1 goaltender, and a trip to Chicago might not help.

The Coyotes look to snap a four-game losing streak to the Blackhawks when the teams meet on Sunday night.

Phoenix (12-12-2) failed to win its third straight on Saturday, falling 4-3 to St. Louis. The Coyotes had won four of their previous five, with backup Mikael Tellqvist starting all of those wins.

Bryzgalov, who is 8-10-1 this season, started against the Blues and allowed three goals in an 8 1/2 minute-span in the second period. He had come in as a replacement for Tellqvist in Phoenix's previous game, helping the Coyotes rally for a 6-3 win over Toronto on Thursday.

He couldn't build on that, though, and goals by Ed Jovanovski, Shane Doan and Kyle Turris weren't enough. Doan's 13th goal of the season 4:15 into the second gave Phoenix a 2-1 lead, but the Blues scored 59 seconds later before taking the lead for good.

"For about 10 minutes at the end of the second they outplayed us badly," said Doan, who has six points in the last four games, including two goals. "We can't as a young team afford to have that happen."

Given his struggles against the Blackhawks (11-6-7) in Chicago, Bryzgalov, may find himself back on the bench when the Coyotes try to end a three-game losing streak at the United Center.

Chicago has won both games against Phoenix this season, including a 4-1 home victory on Oct. 15. The Blackhawks have won four straight and six of seven against the Coyotes, including three in a row at home by a combined score of 11-2. Bryzgalov started all three of those losses.

Saturday's defeat dropped the Coyotes to 4-8-1 on the road this season. Chicago is 7-1-4 at home in 2008-09.

The Blackhawks, though, are 1-1-2 in their last four games there. They fell to 1-2-2 in their last five overall after losing 5-4 in a shootout to Detroit on Saturday.

Jonathan Toews had two goals during the first period to help the Blackhawks take a 3-2 lead after 20 minutes. The Red Wings scored twice in the third period though after Andrew Ladd had increased Chicago's lead to two goals in the second.

"It's frustrating," Chicago's Brent Seabrook said. "We need to shore that up. We need to be better with the puck."

Patrick Sharp also scored for the Blackhawks on Saturday. He has two goals against the Coyotes this season, and eight points in Chicago's last eight games, scoring six goals during that stretch.

Jovanovski, who has seven points in the last six games, has 10 goals and 13 assists in his career against Chicago - the most goals he's had against any opponent. He's been held without a point against the Blackhawks this season.
