Blues-Blackhawks Preview
St. Louis Blues vs. Chicago Blackhawks

Three periods has not been enough to decide any of the previous three matchups between the Chicago Blackhawks and St. Louis Blues this season.

Another close contest should be expected Wednesday night as the Blackhawks look to bounce back from a rare home regulation loss and beat the Blues for the second time in five days.

Chicago (25-11-8) is among the top teams in the Western Conference while St. Louis is last, yet the Central Division rivals have had two games decided in overtime and another in a shootout in 2008-09.

The last five meetings between these clubs have been decided by one goal with Chicago holding a 3-0-2 advantage during that span.

The Blues (18-23-4) won the first two contests before the Blackhawks' 2-1 overtime victory at St. Louis on Saturday. Martin Havlat scored the winner in that game and also had a goal in Chicago's 4-1 loss to visiting Minnesota on Monday.

It was the second straight home defeat for Chicago, which is 14-3-5 at home, but suffered just its second regulation loss at the United Center. The Blackhawks lost 6-4 to Detroit at Wrigley Field on New Year's Day.

"It's tough when you lose at home," forward Troy Brouwer told the Blackhawks' official Web site. "We're always ready to go and we pride ourselves on that."

Chicago, which lost 4-3 to St. Louis in overtime at home on Nov. 14, has not dropped three in a row on home ice this season, but needs to play better after trailing 2-0 through one period against the Wild.

"It wasn't our best game," said goaltender Nikolai Khabibulin, who made 22 saves. "Next time we've got to come out and start better."

Cristobal Huet made 27 saves against the Blues on Saturday and could be in goal for this contest. On an alternating basis with Khabibulin, Huet is 12-7-3 with a 2.31 goals-against average on the season and 1-2-0 with a 2.00 GAA all-time versus St. Louis.

While Havlat has posted four goals in his last five contests, the Blackhawks hope All-Star Patrick Kane can break out his slump.

Kane has a team-leading 42 points on the season, including two goals with an assist against the Blues, but has been held to one point in his last 10 contests overall.

Despite a 7-14-1 road record, St. Louis is trying for a second straight win at Chicago coming off a 5-4 shootout victory at Boston on Monday.

David Backes scored the tying goal with eighth-tenths of second left in regulation and T.J. Oshie and Brad Boyes each scored in the shootout for St. Louis, which rallied with two goals in the final 1:20 of the third period.

"We didn't give up," said reserve goaltender Chris Mason said. "We could've easily packed it in there and game over. We got lucky there and found a way to do it."

Mason could be in net for this game after allowing three goals on 24 shots in replacing Manny Legace, who left Monday's contest with a lower body injury. Mason is 4-13-1 with a 3.16 GAA on the season and 8-7-2 with a 2.63 GAA against the Blackhawks.

Backes, who added an assist Monday, looks to extend his goal-scoring streak to four games.
