EDMONTON, Alberta (AP) - Edmonton goalie Ty Conklin was thrilled to get a shutout.
Conklin stopped 23 shots and Fernando Pisani scored twice, leading the Edmonton Oilers to a 5-0 victory over the reeling Chicago Blackhawks on Tuesday night.
``It's always nice for everybody to get a shutout, not just the goalie,'' said Conklin. ``It was a strong effort right from the get-go.
``The game was never really in question.''
Conklin, who had lost his previous two starts, earned the Oilers' first shutout of the season and the second of his career. He had one as rookie on Nov. 13, 2003, against Minnesota.
``Big lift for us,'' said Oilers coach Craig MacTavish. ``We played the game the right way.''
Shawn Horcoff, Ryan Smyth and Jani Rita also scored for Edmonton, which moved within two points of the first-place Calgary Flames in the Northwest Division.
The Blackhawks, shut out for the first time this season, lost their eighth straight and remain 25 points behind Detroit in the Central.
``It's obviously a real stressful situation,'' said Chicago defensemanTodd Simpson . ``We're finding ways to shoot ourselves in the foot. It's a terrible feeling and we can't accept this.''
Horcoff got the Oilers on the board 2:47 into the game, converting a patient feed from Ales Hemsky off an odd-man rush.
Pisani shoved a rebound off Ethan Moreau's wraparound shot past Craig Anderson 5:42 into the second. His wrister off a pass from Mike Peca just more than 3 minutes later made it 3-0. Smyth capped Edmonton's three-goal period with a power-play score at 11:42.
``I just kind of popped out for the one-timer shot,'' said Pisani of his second goal. ``We wanted to make sure we played a complete 60-minute game.''
MacTavish was impressed with Pisani's play.
``He just seems to get so much productivity out of so little opportunity.''
Rita closed out the scoring with 2:01 left in the game.
Anderson stopped 25 shots in his third straight start filling in for the injured Nikolai Khabibulin.
Notes: Oilers rookie D Matt Greene had his first NHL fight in his second career game, in the first period against Todd Simpson, who went over 100 penalty minutes for the eighth time. ... Smyth has a goal in three straight games and a team-leading 10 with the man-advantage.
