Bruins 2, Blackhawks 1, SO
Boston Bruins 2, Chicago Blackhawks 1

During a game where they honored two of their greatest defensemen, the Blackhawks’ 2-1 loss in a shootout to Boston Wednesday night was a game that would have made Keith Magnuson and Pierre Pilote proud: the game featured great defensive efforts from both teams, tough physical play and more than its share of penalties.

Besides the pregame retirement ceremony, the other story Wednesday was the outstanding goaltending of Nikolai Khabibulin, who matched Boston’s Tim Thomas shot for shot and allowed only one goal to a Bruins team that had scored 13 in its previous three games.

Khabibulin came through in the overtime period as well, stopping eight shots in the period and robbing center Marc Savard of a potential game-winning goal.

“Khabibulin had a special night for us,” said Blackhawks head coach Joel Quenneville. “He gave us a chance to win.”

“We were on the penalty kill for two minutes [in overtime],” said Patrick Kane. “Khabi stood on his head.”

The game was scoreless through nearly two periods until Boston’s Marco Sturm scored a power play goal with less than a minute to go in the second, but the Blackhawks tied the game with a goal by Jonathan Toews midway through the third.

A second goal by Sturm was disallowed when referees ruled that Boston’s Blake Wheeler interfered with Khabibulin the crease.

“I was trying to get out of the crease and get out of [Khabibulin’s] way,” Wheeler said. “I didn’t think I made any contact with him, but I might have still been in his way so he couldn’t slide across.”

Following overtime, Kane tallied his first shootout goal of the season but Boston prevailed in the shootout 2-1 on goals by Wheeler and P.J. Axelsson.

Although their penalty killing unit allowed only one goal on six attempts, the Hawks power play only converted one of its seven chances. The Hawks were out-shot 39 to 32 in the game.

“[Boston] checks well and they play a strong team game,” said Quenneville. “This was a good test for us. We certainly weren’t our best tonight but we did some good things. We’ll take the point, but we certainly would’ve liked the two.”

The Hawks remain undefeated at home in regulation (7-0-4), and will put that record on the line again Friday night against divisional foe St. Louis.
