ST. LOUIS (AP) -The Chicago Blackhawks went to overtime for the second night in a row, but this time they came out on the winning end.
Martin Havlat scored on a wraparound 1:23 into overtime, and Cristobal Huet made 27 saves, some of them spectacular, to lead Chicago to a 2-1 victory over the St. Louis Blues on Saturday night.
Havlat's 14th goal was the difference as the Blackhawks improved to 6-2 in the second of back-to-back games. They lost 3-2 in overtime at home against the New York Rangers on Friday night.
"I thought it was a great play from (Dave Bolland) and especially from (Brent Seabrook) getting it to the net," Havlat said. "I think the goalie had to make a save there before I got the puck so that gave me the chance to go around the net and have a little extra time."
St. Louis goalie Manny Legace blamed himself.
"It went off my skate and in," Legace said. "I'm on my knees and I've got to get across. Just didn't get there in time. It was my fault."
St. Louis dominated play in the first period outshooting Chicago 9-6 and didn't allow a shot for the first 10 minutes. However, the Blackhawks took a 1-0 lead.
With David Backes off for hooking, Troy Brouwer tipped Cameron Barker's slap shot past Legace at 12:56 for his sixth goal.
"Our power play got us a big goal," Huet said. "We battled and we found a way to win in overtime. It was great."
St. Louis finally beat Huet 3:12 into the third period when Backes scored his 15th of the season during a power play.
"I usually say you get what you deserve," Blues coach Andy Murray said. "That didn't work tonight necessarily. Their goalie played well. They got the overtime goal."
Blues coach Joel Quenneville praised his goalie.
"It was a very intense game, it was a goalie win," Quenneville said. "Huey was spectacular, he made some miraculous saves."
Chicago scored just once on 11 power-play chances Friday and went 1-for-3 with the advantage against the Blues. The Blackhawks have connected four times in 33 chances over seven games.
It looked as though St. Louis tied it early in the second when Alex Steen's shot was gloved by Huet in what appeared to be behind the goal line. The play was reviewed, but the call was no-goal because there was no conclusive evidence that the puck went in.
St. Louis outshot Chicago 13-6 in the second period but still trailed 1-0. The Blues had another great chance at the end of the frame, but Brad Winchester tipped T.J. Oshie's pass wide of an empty net on a 2-on-1 break.
Chicago mustered just 19 shots in regulation, its lowest total this season, and finished with 21 - tying for the team's smallest total since a 4-2 loss at Washington on Oct. 11.
Notes: St. Louis forward Keith Tkachuk missed his second consecutive game because of an apparent head injury sustained Tuesday in a 3-1 loss at Calgary. ... Chicago RW Kris Versteeg leads rookies with 36 points. St. Louis C Patrik Berglund tops first-year players with 14 goals and is second in rookie scoring with 29 points. ...
